ACTION OF THE MONTH

(You might feel overwhelmed by all the things we

should/could be doing etc.....Can you focus on our monthly goal?  Share it

with a friend and work on it together)

Our action for the month of August is to avoid using single use plastic.  This may be or feel impossible for you, but this is the point of this exercise.  Note every time you run into this decision and note what you do about it.  Do you have a choice?  If you do, what choice do you make?  What kind of solutions are there?  How has Covid-19 changed the prevalence of single use things?  Reach out and let me know what this activity is like for you; it is likely to be alarming!

-Thank you for joining me!

OTHER ACTIONS:

-USE LESS WATER

-shower less often and for less time

-audit your landscaping's appetite

-opt for a more plant-based diet

-use native plants as they are already suited to your region

-take care of your clothes, wash them less often

-opt for well-made and ethically produced clothing that will last longer

-collect water (need inspiration for this? check these folks out)

-SHARE

-share with neighbors; not everyone needs their own lawnmower, rakes, tools etc.  Especially tools that use power or gasoline or that last a long time, these can be shared among many.

-CARPOOL!!!!  This requires a type of human interaction we've programmed ourselves to avoid, however it's a better choice for the environment and it helps de-clutter the roads

-SAY NO TO ONE TIME USE THINGS

-bring your own cup, bring your own water bottle and utensils and napkin

-avoid small pouches of ketchup and condiments that hold next to nothing

-when shopping, just bring your own bags and KEEP USING THOSE BAGS because they too have a carbon footprint to produce - they are not free of resource cost.

-OPT OUT OF UNNECESSARY MAIL (this could be considered a one-time use item).  If you're getting magazines and mailings you don't want/use, call the company sending them to you and request to no longer receive them.  What about apartment complexes or zip codes where you're automatically opted-in?  How do we avoid the blanket inclusion of this wasteful advertising?

-VOTE WITH YOUR MONEY if you live in a commercial-society.  If you think organic should cost less and should, once again be the norm, then you must buy organic at least once in a while.  Until we have statistical tools to provide us with insight into our true values, we rely on what statistics DO measure and the effects of those measurements
